There are many skills that make up writing. There is the physical act of holding the pencil and forming the letters correctly; writing individual words; writing sentences; the rules of grammar and punctuation; and the creative skill of expressing an idea.
Before kindergarten a child should know the alphabet, be able to write his own name and recognize and right each letter of the alphabet.
