Reading is probably the most important skill your child can learn. All other learning hinges on the success at reading.

Experts say that the single best predictor of how well a child will do in school is how much reading takes place in the home!

• Children who have been read to will pick up a book and orient it with the spine on the left and face up. They know the direction to turn the pages.
• They have a longer attention span:  they have learned to sit still and pay attention.
• They have better vocabularies.
• They are better writers.
• Reading expands the imagination and foster creativity.

There are several aspects to learning to read.

• The first stages are to become aware of the individual sounds in words and to learn the alphabet.
• Next, the child learns to associate the letters with sounds (phonics) and read individual words.
