Imagine the Alphabet
Time to move away from the screens, worksheets, flashcards, and paper and pencil!
- Throw a ball back and forth. The person who starts the game says A and throws the ball. The person who catches the ball says the next letter and throws it to another person.
- Make alphabet letters out of clay. Write your name, or other words. One person makes an uppercase letter, the other must make the same letter lowercase.
- Get alphabet refrigerator letters. Arrange the letters in order or write your name.
- Finger-paint the alphabet.
- Look for the letters in sequence while riding in the car or bus. Variations: allow license plates, or only allow license plates.
- Concentration: Use letter tiles, or print out two sets of the alphabet, or one page of uppercase, and the other lowercase, on heavy paper and place them face down on the table. Each player turns over two letters and says the letters. They keep the letters if they match. Otherwise, turn them back over. The winner is the one who collects the most letters. Variations: the winner is the one who makes the last match. A single player can turn two at a time and try to clear all the pieces. Use a subset of the alphabet to make it easier. Add wild cards.
- Say the alphabet backwards.
- One person says a letter and the other has to say the next letter or the previous letter.
- Draw a letter on the child's back. The child has to guess the letter.
- Instead of frosting the whole cupcake, put a little icing in a plastic bag and snip off the corner. Twist or fold the top of the bag and write letters on each cupcake. Let the little ones help! It's healthier and more fun.
